arcadeTechnology has changed so much we do in our everyday lives; from the way we order food from delivery services such as Deliveroo to the way we now commute using services such as Uber and Lyft these are all powered by technology and more often than not accessible from our mobile or cellphone devices. Another area of technology which has come along in leaps and bounds is the gaming arena. We’ve evolved from old school arcade games to some of the most intense virtual reality games which require some series technology to play them – Today we’re going to look at the history of arcade games and how they have evolved now into hand set games we now play.

The history of Arcade Games:

Depending on your age you’ll probably remember the dawn of ‘coin operated’ machines in mostly amusment parks; we all know the pinball machine but what many of us don’t know is that this was the dawn of the gaming arena which has now grown into a multi-billion dollar sports arena industry that we now watch.  For those of you who don’t know, because not many exist today, an ‘amusement arcade’ is a place that houses all games that are coin operated, whether you put real fiscal money or you need to buy arcade tokens and amusement arcade will house these machines.  Of course by now you must be wondering what was the name of the first gaming machine?

The first successful coin-operated game was called Baffle Ball, created by David Gottlieb in 1931, hailing out of Chicago in the US they then founded the company which came to be known as  Gottlieb and Co. around 1927, at it’s time it was one of the largest arcade game companies on the planet.  This industry then went on to develop some of the games we still play today such as jukeboxes, pinball machines, slots, gumball machines, and later video game cabinets, had its roots in gambling, a controversial industry in America.

At the time there were some strict rules in the US around gaming and gambling so companies had to evolve and come up with smart ways to allow there clients to play there games, one of these methods was they would offer ‘prizes’ such as drinks or snacks and players could redeem some of these at the counter of the shop or bar they were playing in.
